Clinical Hematology

Clinical Hematology is a super speciality division of Medical sciences that deals with various disorders of blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow. Bone marrow is the site in body that produces all blood cells i.e. erythrocytes (RBC), leucocytes (WBC) and Platelets. Any abnormality in the production of these cells leads to clinical disorders that are dealt by a Hematologist. So, over-production or under production of RBC causes polycythemia and anemia respectively. Malignant overproduction of WBC causes leukemia and lymphoproliferative disorders. Similarly, increased destruction of blood cells can lead to deficiency states like hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia etc. Abnormal activity and deficiency of various coagulation proteins can lead to abnormal thrombosis and hemophilia respectively.

Hematological disorders may lead to varying states of bleeding, pallor, predisposition to infections and enlargement of liver, spleen and lymph nodes etc, besides causing constitutional symptoms of fever, malaise, weight loss etc. These clinical features require proper evaluation and subsequent treatment under supervision of a Hematologist.

The Department of Hematology at Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality hospital, New Delhi aims to provide quality Hematology services to our patients. We have a state of the art laboratory performing various tests to diagnose different hematological disorders.

1. Malignant hematological disorders:
  • Acute leukemia- acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Chronic myeloproliferative disorder - CML, polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, myelofibrosis etc.
  • Chronic lymphoproliferative disorders- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia etc.
  • Lymphomas- Hodgkin and Non Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Multiple myeloma

2. Benign Hematological disorders
  • Anemia- iron deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, thalassemia etc.
  • Bleeding disorders- Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), hemophilia, platelet function disorders etc.
  • Thrombotic disorders- venous thrombosis (acute and chronic), Heparin induced thrombocytopenia etc
  • Aplastic anemia, Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria

3. Stem cell transplant
  • In the near future, we aim to start bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant program for various hematological disorders like acute leukemia, aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma etc. We shall do both autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants.

4. DAY CARE CENTER
  • Blood product transfusion- for all hematology patients such as aplastic anemia, thalassemia and myelodysplastic syndrome and Factor therapy for hemophilia patients, platelet support and fresh frozen plasma/ cryoprecipitate for patients with platelet function defects and rare factor deficiencies.
  • Procedures- Bone marrow aspirate, biopsies, intra-thecal and intravenous chemotherapy, central line placement and removal, skin biopsy, phlebotomy etc.
